ICE Agents Arrive at US Airports as TSA Faces Staff Shortage During Ongoing DHS Shutdown by Democrats

ICE Deployed to Airports Amid Government Shutdown

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have been sent to various airports as Senate Democrats continue to withhold funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

On Saturday, ICE was brought in to support Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees grappling with a national airport crisis. This situation arose during a partial government shutdown that left TSA agents unpaid and stripped of certain “non-essential privileges,” according to reports. President Donald Trump suggested on Truth Social that ICE would assist at airports if “radical left Democrats” couldn’t come to an agreement on funding—shortly after a fifth vote to end the shutdown failed with a count of 47-37.

ICE agents have reportedly been deployed to at least 13 airports, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which consistently ranks as the busiest in the country. It’s worth noting that over one-third of TSA employees have reported feeling unwell, which has compounded the staffing issues at these airports.

During a Friday address, Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania diverged from Senate Democrats by stating he opposed the shutdown. He suggested restarting DHS operations, ensuring everyone gets paid, and improving security in the process.

In a surprising move, Elon Musk expressed a willingness to cover the salaries of TSA employees, although it remains unclear if government officials are considering this offer, with legalities still in question. The DHS did not immediately provide a comment regarding the situation.
