UCLA’s Tournament Journey Ends with Controversy

PHILADELPHIA – As UCLA’s season was nearing its conclusion, Trent Perry made a drive toward the basket.

With under five minutes left in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, he faced Collegiate forward Alex Karaban at the rim. Despite the contact, Perry managed to stand up and score with a layup.

Just as Perry rolled off the court, Karaban reached back to block the shot.

One of Karaban’s teammates retrieved the loose ball, and the Huskies seemed ready to push forward in the game, but then a whistle interrupted the flow.

Point guard Cyrus Demaree Jr. had just crossed half-court when the referee signaled a technical foul.

UCLA’s coach, Mick Cronin, turned and gestured towards the official, clearly frustrated.

It appeared that Cronin’s sarcastic applause directed at the referee—likely in response to a non-call on the prior play—had led to the technical foul.

With the game paused, he spread his arms in disbelief, seemingly trying to communicate, “I didn’t say anything.”

Karaban stepped up to the foul line and made both technical free throws, widening the gap from nine to eleven points against the Bruins.

Unfortunately for UCLA, they couldn’t stage a comeback, ultimately losing 73-57, which solidified their disappointing exit from the tournament.

The absence of key player Tyler Bilodeau, who was sidelined with a knee injury for the third consecutive game, certainly didn’t help. The Bruins were unusually disorganized offensively, missing rebounds and committing fouls on several three-point shots.

But perhaps the most contentious moment was Cronin’s technical foul with 4 minutes and 41 seconds remaining.

When pressed for his thoughts about the incident later, Cronin replied, “I have no comment on that.”

There’s speculation whether Cronin’s previous disagreements with officials or his expressive demeanor on the sidelines played a role in this unexpected technical foul.

The California Post sought clarification from the officials, but there was no immediate response.

In a statement, officials indicated that the technical was issued under Rule 10, Section 3 (Class A Non-Sporting Violations), which addresses unsportsmanlike conduct, including disrespect towards officials.

As the season concluded, Cronin offered no additional comments on his silent interaction with the officials and chose to move forward.
