Discovery of Migrants in Stolen Trailer
Police workers found 229 migrants trapped in a trailer after smugglers attempted to transport them through Mexico towards the U.S. border. The trailer, reported stolen, was seized by authorities the same day.
This event took place on Monday afternoon in Veracruz, where officials retrieved the stolen tractor-trailer. José Manuel Pozos Castro, the director of public security in Veracruz, indicated that the driver was arrested and the trailer was taken to a detention facility in Xalapa.
At the detention center, employees heard cries from within the trailer and notified the police. When they opened it, they discovered many migrants who were dehydrated from the heat inside.
State police called in emergency medical personnel to assist the migrants, while Mexico’s National Immigration Institute arrived to process the group and determine their status. In total, there were 229 migrants, including 17 minors.
This incident arises amidst increasing pressure from the U.S. government on Mexico to address human smuggling operations. Previously, the Mexican government allowed migrants to pass freely through the country, but recently, immigration authorities have started limiting travel documents at the southern border. This change has complicated operations for human smuggling groups within Mexico.
