Repeat offender faces murder charges in Charlotte hit-and-run case

Tragic Hit-and-Run Incident in Charlotte

A young woman lost her life in a hit-and-run accident in Charlotte, as reported by police. The victim, a 23-year-old named Sophie Klippel, was struck by a driver with a troubling history.

Thomas Haynes, 46, was arrested on Monday. He now faces several serious charges, including second-degree murder and felony hit-and-run, among others. The incident occurred last Thursday at an intersection in east Charlotte, where officers found two abandoned vehicles: a Honda Odyssey and a Kia Soul.

It appears Haynes, the driver of the Honda, left the scene after the crash. Meanwhile, a 21-year-old woman, Lena Klippel, who was driving the Kia, and her 62-year-old passenger, Kelly Klippel, were taken to the hospital but fortunately sustained only non-life-threatening injuries.

Sadly, Sophie Klippel, who was not wearing her seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Initial investigations indicated that Haynes ran a stop sign and collided with the Kia. Speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the accident.

The situation is even more distressing considering Haynes had previously been involved in other incidents, including street racing at excessive speeds. Records show a history of arrests for various offenses, including theft and weapons charges, prior to this tragic event.

As the investigation continues, the impact of this crash weighs heavily on the community and the victim’s family. It raises questions about road safety and the consequences faced by repeat offenders.
