Retired General Jack Keene has expressed significant concerns about the idea of a ceasefire with Iran, suggesting that the U.S. should sustain military pressure to encourage Iran to abandon its nuclear aspirations. On a recent episode of “Hannity,” he noted, “If we go for a ceasefire, that’s playing right into their hands.” His outlook is that continued pressure is necessary for reaching a meaningful agreement.
Keene’s comments come amid ongoing strikes in the region, as President Trump has indicated progress in talks with Iran. Recently, he announced a five-day delay on U.S. military actions against Iranian energy facilities.
In a statement, Trump mentioned that Iran seems open to discussions and asserted that they would “never have nuclear weapons,” claiming that Iranian officials had accepted certain terms. Despite this, Keene seems doubtful about the administration’s intentions, stating, “We are dealing with an administration that is a pathological liar and fraudster.” He argues that the U.S. needs to be wary, recalling that the conflict began partly due to Iranian deception surrounding their commitments.
Keene emphasized that any potential agreement must compel Iran to give up capabilities the U.S. and allies are already attempting to dismantle through military means. He pointed out critical areas such as Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, its ballistic missile program, and drone capabilities, which should be fully addressed in any deal.
He also mentioned that ongoing military operations offer significant leverage in negotiations, warning that halting hostilities prematurely could undermine the U.S. position. “We want to continue to put pressure on them to come to some sort of meaningful agreement,” he concluded.
