Congressional Reactions to Chicago Murder
On Wednesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson spoke out regarding the murder of Sheridan Gorman in Chicago, attributing the crime to the Democratic Party’s policies on immigration. He expressed that the circumstances surrounding Gorman’s death were a direct result of what he called a pro-immigrant amnesty approach.
“The system worked exactly as the Democrats intended,” Johnson remarked. He continued by highlighting that there was a Democrat in control both in the White House and in Chicago, suggesting that lenient immigration policies created a safe environment for criminal activity.
Open border policies and sanctuary city practices have empowered illegal immigrants who commit crimes. This is why we are outraged.
The individual accused of the murder entered the U.S. in May 2023 and was arrested for shoplifting the following month. In both instances, the suspect was released by authorities despite public disapproval. Allegedly, this person also had connections to gang members.
Johnson remarked further:
The suspect was in law enforcement custody twice and had multiple opportunities to be detained. The open border policies from the Democratic Party allowed for their release, and the sanctuary policies provided immunity. Sadly, we lost Sheridan Gorman when such measures should have kept her safe.
It’s a tragic repeat of what happened with Georgia murder victim Laken Riley, among many others.
How often do we need to see this? It’s disheartening. The longer Democrats shield dangerous criminals, the more innocent Americans will suffer.
From 2021 to 2024, several Democratic-backed laws have sought to establish an amnesty zone for undocumented immigrants, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Such amnesty zones purportedly provide a legal safety net for immigrants, enabling them to work, rent, and engage in commerce under Democratic guidance. This strategy appears aimed at strengthening ties with local businesses while moving immigrants closer to securing amnesty and voting rights, all despite potential negative impacts on American citizens.
During a House press conference, Republican leaders criticized the amnesty zone practices and called on Democrats to stop impeding Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding, which they argue has led to issues affecting airport operations and employee wages.
“If the Democrats get their way, this will become a narrative for every city in the country,” stated Majority Whip Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.).
