JetBlue Considering Sale to Rival Airline

JetBlue Airways has engaged advisors to assess a possible sale to another airline. This development was revealed on Wednesday, from a source familiar with the situation.

Following the news, shares of the low-cost airline climbed by 14%.

The information indicates that JetBlue is exploring different scenarios regarding how a merger with either United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, or Southwest Airlines would be perceived by regulators in Washington, D.C.

As of Tuesday’s market close, JetBlue’s value was approximately $1.55 billion, according to data from LSEG.

Reuters has not been able to confirm this report independently.

In response to the report, JetBlue expressed in an email that they have made significant headway on their multi-year JetForward strategy and are concentrating on executing their plans for financial improvement.

“We believe JetForward is the right path to return to profitability and create shareholder value while providing opportunities for our crews,” they stated.

Earlier this month, JetBlue projected an increased operating profit ranging from $850 million to $950 million by 2027. This projection relies on its JetForward plan, which aims to cut costs, expand its network, and enhance services for travelers over time.

In 2024, the airline terminated a $3.8 billion merger deal with Spirit Airlines after a U.S. judge blocked it due to antitrust concerns.

Last year, JetBlue also announced a collaboration with United Airlines, which allows passengers to book flights on both airlines’ websites and earn points in each other’s frequent flyer programs.

This partnership includes an agreement where JetBlue will provide United with slots for up to seven daily round-trip flights at New York’s JFK International Airport, starting in 2027.

However, the report emphasizes that JetBlue is still in the early stages and may choose not to pursue negotiations with competitors. It remains unclear if any discussions have occurred or if they have received any interest from other airlines.
