SF Giants defeated decisively by Yankees in Tony Vitello’s first game as manager

Giants’ Opening Day Struggles

SAN FRANCISCO — It was a tough start for the Giants on opening day.

But hey, there’s still time left in the season.

Tony Vitello is set to kick off his managerial stint on Friday, hoping to bounce back after a disheartening loss to the Yankees. He’s eager for that first major league win.

Logan Webb faced a rough outing, while Max Fried effectively neutralized San Francisco’s lineup, leading to a dismal final score of 0-7.

The Giants’ three hits marked the lowest for a season opener since 1965. That’s quite a statistic to grapple with.

“Everyone is looking for better results, for themselves and for the team,” Vitello commented. “A more competitive effort would have made a difference. They could have been more aggressive on the bases. More chances for advancement might have helped.”

All went downhill in the second inning, with the Yankees sending nine players to the plate and quickly building a 5-0 lead.

Though Matt Chapman made it to third base early on, the Giants couldn’t manage to bring him home until the ninth inning, showcasing their struggles.

What It Means

This game was significant for many reasons, including the first ABS challenge and the debut of Netflix’s broadcast, but unfortunately for Vitello, the most noteworthy was the loss.

Vitello lightheartedly noted starting the day 1-0 after distributing some pastries to the coaching staff but sadly ended up 0-1 in his managerial debut.

Who is Hot

While the Giants trailed 6-0, JT Brubaker impressed in his debut, pitching two scoreless innings. Keaton Wynn came out of the bullpen after Webb’s stint, though relying on taller pitchers isn’t usually a good sign.

Caleb Killian managed a scoreless inning in the ninth, helping keep the Yankees off the board for four innings despite already being behind 0-7.

“Caleb earned a real spot with us,” Vitello said. “I thought he had our most positive inning on the mound.”

Fried displayed remarkable prowess, striking out 16 of his last 18 batters faced.

“Their players just happened to outdo ours,” Vitello remarked regarding the pitching matchup.

Who is Not?

After showcasing dominance in the World Baseball Classic, Webb didn’t quite find his groove, reminiscent of his struggles in the final Cactus League game.

The seven runs given up tied his record for the most in nearly 90 starts at Oracle Park. Although he aimed to limit hard hits, the Yankees accumulated nine on him in just five innings.

“They ambushed me,” Webb reflected. “I aimed for my targets, but execution faltered at times.”

Aaron Judge had a surprisingly tough time at bat, striking out multiple times before Webb left the mound.

While Rafael Devers contributed one of the few hits, his recent hamstring issue led Vitello to opt for him as the designated hitter instead of playing first base.

To the Next

After being the main feature on Netflix’s opening night, the Giants will take a day off to regroup before hosting their afternoon home opener on Friday.

Left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray, coming off a strong spring, will face right-handed Cam Schlitter.

First pitch is at 1:35 p.m., and Hall of Fame announcer John Miller is set to follow comedian Bert Kreischer at the pregame festivities.

“We don’t have all the answers just yet,” Vitello said. “But perhaps looking back as a group, we might have let our emotions get the better of us. Whatever the cause, adjustments are on the agenda.”
