Mookie Wilson Delivers Lunch at Mets Home Opener

Mookie Wilson, the Mets legend, surprised fans at the team’s home opener by serving lunch during the game, describing the experience as “coming full circle.”

This event marked the debut of his family’s Legacy Catering Company at Citi Field, a venture that has been anticipated by many.

“I love baseball. I love this team. I’m just like any other fan,” Wilson shared, expressing his deep connection to the team. His emotions vary with the games, but now, he’s focused on the food instead of the scores. “There’s a little less pressure, but it feels the same!”

After catching the first pitch, the 70-year-old joined his brothers at the grill, serving pulled pork sandwiches and mac and cheese. The Legacy Catering Company, which the Wilsons started in 2022, has catered various events, but this marks their first permanent presence at the stadium.

Wilson, who coached the Mets from 1996 to 2002, noted the significance of this opportunity, especially with his family background in baseball. “No one plays baseball anymore, but we still cook together,” he said, reflecting on how he never envisioned serving food at a ballpark.

“We played baseball because we loved it. There’s nothing wrong with getting paid to do what you love. Now, cooking and baseball are coming together—this is full circle.”

He remarked that “retirement is overrated” and expressed mixed feelings about transitioning to a more unpredictable restaurant business. Yet he remains optimistic about the future, encouraging others, “Don’t let fear control you.”

The booth attracted attention, especially when Wilson was present with his brothers. “He’s one of the greatest players in Mets history!” exclaimed Todd Silverstein, who recalled watching the 1986 World Series.

Even those who weren’t aware of Wilson’s ownership were drawn in by his presence. Silverstein planned to return regularly just to support him. “I just bought season tickets this year and I’m going to come here every time. I have to bring my son and grandson!”

Vincent Milillo, lucky enough to receive food directly from Wilson, described the experience as “pretty cool. He’s a legend.” He cherished fond memories of the 1986 season.

Matthew Gamsey, alongside his son Aaron, echoed similar sentiments, grateful for the chance to meet a player who shaped so many of their memories.
