A new Netflix series starring Maya Hawke from “Stranger Things” is on the lookout for someone to portray a character with a rather snobbish attitude, set in upstate New York.
This adaptation of Liz Moore’s upcoming film, “The God of the Woods,” is calling for actors aged 20 to 69 from the Adirondacks region to start filming next month, as reported by the Press Republican.
The casting notice highlights a preference for actors who either have accents from or are familiar with the North Country area.
The distinctive accents of the Adirondack locals are set to play a significant role in the Netflix project.
North Country accents can often sound rather different, and some city residents might find them a bit off-putting. These city folks tend to use phrases like “fugedaboudit” and drink “coffee” for breakfast, while Northern New Yorkers replace “across” with “across,” refer to “milk” as “merck,” and exclaim “Jesus Crow!”—probably to avoid harsher expressions common in the city.
The Adirondacks serve as the backdrop for this series, which Netflix describes as a multi-generational drama. It follows investigator Judy Luptak as she delves into the case of a 13-year-old girl who goes missing from a summer camp.
Maya Hawke, who was born in New York City and is the daughter of actors Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, will take on the role of Luptak.
Irish actress Kerry Condon, who received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” is set to portray the missing girl’s mother.
The casting director, Laura Rosenthal, is a seasoned professional in the industry with notable credits including “A Quiet Place” and “May December.”
Interestingly, while the series is rooted in the Adirondacks and showcases its unique dialect, filming will actually take place elsewhere. Production is scheduled to kick off in June at Beacon, located just outside the Hudson Valley, according to the Press Republican.
