Predators Face Fan Backlash Over LGBTQ+ Support
The Nashville Predators of the NHL are experiencing considerable criticism from fans regarding the team’s endorsement of the LGBTQ+ community.
The team announced that during their game against the New Jersey Devils, a group called “Cowgaze” will perform the national anthem, which will include non-binary LGBTQ+ individuals, along with a country music artist.
Many fans reacted sharply, with comments questioning the appropriateness of mixing sports with LGBTQ+ themes. One tweet expressed confusion: “Why would you connect your brand to a sexual experience at a hockey game?”
Bridgestone Arena’s official account had promoted the event, stating, “Tomorrow night, March 26th, we’ll be celebrating PRIDE at Smashville. Featuring Medium Build, Cowgaze, Brady Riley, and more!” A rainbow emoji accompanied the message.
However, this post sparked a wave of negative reactions from those who believe politics should remain separate from sports. Former Texas Congressman Matt Rinaldi remarked, “A team called the Predators, celebrating Pride Night while facing the Devils, and with a band named ‘Cowgaze’… it doesn’t look good.”
Another fans’ opinion echoed similar sentiments: “This is not a family-friendly environment. The NHL should refrain from promoting this radical LGBTQ agenda,” said a commentator on social media.
One user shared their discontent further: “Totally unnecessary and inappropriate. This should be about dignity and respect for our customers.” Another passionate supporter declared they would no longer attend games endorsing what they termed “sin.”
A recurring theme among critics has been a call for a more suitable focus during games, with one commenting, “Let’s set aside all sexual innuendos in favor of more fitting events. This is just plain weird.”
In addition to the events planned, the Predators are selling special Pride jerseys and auctioning player nameplates, with proceeds directed toward LGBTQ+ organizations.
As for the Predators, Devils, and NHL, they have not offered any comments regarding the backlash.
