Cesar Chavez’s Name Removed from California Calendar

In a surprising and swift decision, the California Legislature has voted to officially remove the name of Cesar Chavez from the state calendar.

This action follows a recent investigation that revealed serious allegations against Chavez, the co-founder of the United Farm Workers, identifying him as a potential serial sexual predator.

Assembly Bill 2156 will soon change the holiday from Cesar Chavez Day to Farmworkers Day, just in time for celebrations next week.

For many years, Chavez was regarded as a hero of the American left, his legacy celebrated across numerous schools and public parks. However, that image faced a significant challenge when disturbing details about his alleged misconduct towards women and girls came to light recently.

The response from California lawmakers was striking, with a unanimous vote of 37-0 to remove Chavez’s name.

Senate President Pro Tem Monique Limon stated, “Our farmworkers remind us that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Their days and lives inspire us as we strive for a better California.”

In the wake of these allegations, California State University, Fresno, has covered a statue of Chavez located on its campus. Cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Sacramento are now working to erase his name from public spaces. Activists are advocating for a transition to honoring Dolores Huerta, and some states have moved to eliminate the holiday entirely.
