Kevin McGonigle Shines on Opening Day for the Detroit Tigers
When the Detroit Tigers announced that young infielder Kevin McGonigle had made the Opening Day roster, excitement was understandably high.
Yet, McGonigle managed to exceed those expectations right from the start.
During the season opener, he launched a two-run double with the bases loaded on the very first pitch he faced. Overall, he collected four hits in five at-bats, driving in two runs and scoring twice himself. Remarkably, he became the third-youngest player in the last century of MLB to achieve four or more hits on Opening Day.
“It’s a great debut,” said Manager AJ Hinch after Detroit’s 8-2 victory. “He can hit.”
Hinch slotted McGonigle in the sixth position of the batting lineup and had him play third base. In the first inning, with the bases loaded, he seized the first pitch he saw—a 91 mph cutter that cut inside—and sent it down the right field line, bringing two runners home.
“I was nervous, but it’s strange. Once I focused on hitting, the nerves just went away,” McGonigle reflected after the game. “I felt good up there. I was really confident. I hope to keep that feeling.”
In his second at-bat, McGonigle faced a bit of a challenge. After missing a fastball and falling behind 0-2 with a curveball, he battled back to even the count at 2-2. He then capitalized on another fastball, sending a line drive over the right field wall, nearly missing his first MLB home run. He slid headfirst into second base, just ahead of the throw.
Later in the fifth inning, he reached on an infield hit and popped out in the seventh, marking his first out in the majors. However, when he batted again in the ninth, there was still one more chance.
He singled to right-center for his fourth hit of the day.
“He won’t be as nervous in future at-bats, and if he plays like this under pressure, it’ll be a fun year,” Hinch commented. “I love how aggressive he was on the field. That big hit allowed us to create some breathing room and set a positive tone for the day.”
McGonigle made history as the youngest player on the Tigers’ Opening Day roster since Omar Infante in 2003, and he’s now marked as the third-youngest player in the last century to have four hits in an Opening Day event.
Only two other players, Ken Griffey Jr. and Delino DeShields Jr., have accomplished this on Opening Day back in 1990.
“I kept telling myself it’s just another game,” McGonigle shared. “I maintained that mindset, and I’m eager to keep it going.”
For McGonigle, it might have felt like just another game, but for Tigers fans, it represented something much bigger—a bright future ahead.
