Schiff warns of investigations into ABC and CBS regarding Trump settlements in the upcoming Congress.

Sen. Adam Schiff’s Warning to Media Outlets

Senator Adam Schiff from California has issued a warning regarding news organizations that have aligned themselves with President Donald Trump, particularly if the Democrats regain control of Congress in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.

He stated, “These media companies must recognize that things could change significantly. Presently, they may avoid direct payments or content alterations involving Trump, but once Congress shifts, all of this will come under scrutiny. If prior reviews were insufficient, this will come to light,” as mentioned in a recent article.

Schiff stressed that audits will occur, emphasizing the necessity for these corporations to understand they could face accountability for any corrupt or illegal actions. “We can’t just overlook whether funds were exchanged to resolve these matters. Holding them accountable is crucial,” he added.

Concerns Amidst Media Changes

There’s an unsettling atmosphere reported at CNN as employees brace for potential changes linked to a proposed acquisition by Paramount, which has reportedly outbid Netflix for Warner Bros. Discovery. Schiff suggested in the podcast “The Town” that Trump may have a fixation on reshaping CNN’s content.

CNN, currently owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, could soon fall under the leadership of Paramount CEO David Ellison and his billionaire father, Larry Ellison. This potential merger involves a staggering $111 billion offer, and the Ellisons have ties to Trump, leading to apprehensions among critics about CNN’s future direction.

Shifts at CBS News

In light of recent changes, David Ellison has assured CNN of maintaining editorial independence. The new leadership aims to appeal to a broader political base, reportedly targeting 70% of the political middle class, a goal that was echoed when acquiring CBS News last fall.

Representatives from Disney, ABC News, Paramount, CBS News, and Warner Bros. Discovery have yet to comment on these developments.

In a significant incident last December, just weeks before Trump began his second term, ABC News reached a $16 million settlement with him following a defamation lawsuit connected to past statements made by George Stephanopoulos, which Trump’s legal team claimed falsely implicated him in acts of “sexual abuse.”

Settlement Controversies

TV host George Stephanopoulos had stated Trump was responsible in relation to the E. Jean Carroll case, despite a civil jury holding Trump liable. As part of the settlement, ABC News issued a public apology, which was sanctioned by then-CEO Bob Iger.

Critics expressed disappointment over the settlement, likening it to bending to Trump’s will. Similarly, Paramount and CBS News had previously settled a $16 million advance for Trump’s lawsuit concerning edits made to an interview with Kamala Harris during the 2024 campaign. Trump’s legal representatives accused CBS of manipulating the content, their initial demand being $10 billion.

At the time, many argued that the settlement was a strategic move by Paramount to facilitate an $8 billion merger with Skydance Media. Notably, the merger received approval shortly after the settlement was finalized.
