Democrats uncertain about whether the accused murderer who is an undocumented immigrant should have been deported

Debate Erupts Over Deportation Policy Following Tragic Murder

Republican senators, including Ted Cruz from Texas and Rick Scott from Florida, have publicly criticized a policy that allowed the killer of 18-year-old undocumented immigrant Sheridan Gorman to remain in the U.S. Meanwhile, Democratic senators seemed hesitant when asked if Gorman’s killer should have been deported prior to the murder this month.

Gorman, a student at Loyola University in Chicago, was allegedly murdered by 25-year-old Jose Medina, an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela. The Department of Homeland Security, under the Trump administration, reported that Medina was detained by U.S. Border Patrol on May 9, 2023, but subsequently released during the Biden administration.

Not long after, Medina faced shoplifting charges in Chicago but was released again on June 19, 2023. A warrant was issued after he failed to appear in court, and this warrant remained active at the time of Gorman’s death, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

“Shoplifting isn’t a violent act. It doesn’t mean someone is inclined to commit violent crimes,” remarked Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois, as he responded to inquiries regarding Medina’s case and deportation issues surrounding it.

Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada expressed her inability to speculate on whether Gorman’s killer and others should have been deported, trusting instead that the justice system would hold individuals accountable. In a somewhat evasive manner, she mentioned, “I am not aware of the incident.”

On a different note, Senator Tammy Duckworth, also from Illinois, pointed out that the aggressive deportation strategies under former President Trump have hindered federal law enforcement efforts to focus on genuinely dangerous offenders. “If Trump had cleaned up Chicago, those people wouldn’t be here, right?” she stated.

Senator Elissa Slotkin from Michigan offered a more pragmatic viewpoint. She agreed that violent offenders should be deported but emphasized that those who peacefully protest shouldn’t be targeted. “It should be clear who deserves to stay and who doesn’t,” she suggested.

Despite the differing opinions, Democratic lawmakers acknowledged that violent criminals illegally residing in the country should face deportation. Cortez-Masto highlighted that anyone who commits a crime, particularly homicide, should be held accountable and face immigration enforcement.

Senator Angela Alsobrooks from Maryland added, “Every community deserves safety. Violent offenders should not be in our country.” However, Durbin did mention the need for careful screening of entrants into the U.S. and reinforced that those posing a danger should be removed.

Conversely, Senators Cruz and Scott quickly lashed out at the Democrats, accusing them of prioritizing the interests of illegal immigrants over American citizens. “Gorman’s death and Medina’s lack of deportation is tragic and avoidable,” Cruz remarked. He further criticized Democratic representatives for their positions, stating they appear more concerned with protecting offenders than American citizens.

Scott echoed these sentiments, expressing disgust at the Democratic narrative that implies concern for American victims while failing to act on crimes committed by undocumented individuals.
