A recent traffic stop in Texas escalated into a chaotic chase that ended with the discovery of almost 20 illegal immigrants, including minors, hidden in the back of a semi-truck near the southern U.S. border.
Lt. Chris Olivares, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), shared a video showing a suspected smuggler leaping from a Volvo semi-truck and fleeing as police gave chase. This incident took place on a Monday night in Webb County, South Texas, after a state trooper had pulled the truck over.
Olivares noted that the driver, who attempted to escape on foot, was quickly apprehended by law enforcement. Upon searching the truck, authorities found 20 illegal immigrants concealed in the sleeping area.
In the video released, officers can be seen drawing back the curtains of the truck’s cabin to unearth the hidden migrants, who, rather quietly, only nodded in response to the police inquiries. Among them were four minors from Mexico and Guatemala.
The driver was identified as Miguel Angel Velazquez Chavez, a 25-year-old Mexican national. He’s facing charges for evading arrest and human smuggling and has been booked in the Webb County Jail.
The group of immigrants, now in the custody of the U.S. Border Patrol, highlights ongoing issues with human smuggling in Texas, despite a noted decrease in border crossings under the previous administration.
In nearby Maverick County, Texas, another suspect, Yoisdervis Nuñez Acosta, a Cuban national, was arrested following a high-speed chase that ended when police maneuvered the car into a controlled stop. Acosta tried to hide in some bushes but was quickly caught. Another person, American Alexander Rodriguez Acosta, was also detained. Both face multiple counts of smuggling, while six illegal immigrants from Mexico and Vietnam were turned over to authorities.
Both operations occurred along well-established smuggling routes on the southern border. It’s worth noting that in 2022, law enforcement discovered the tragic scene of 53 migrants left inside a sweltering truck in San Antonio, marking one of the most severe human smuggling events in U.S. history.
This ongoing situation consistently raises concerns regarding border management and safety, as officials repeatedly stress the grave nature of human smuggling operations.
