Cole's French Dip permanently closes after 118 years in Los Angeles

Farewell to a Culinary Landmark

After more than a century of serving delicious meals, Cole’s French Dip closed its doors on Saturday, marking the end of an era for one of Los Angeles’ iconic dining spots. Officially recognized as the birthplace of the French dip sandwich, its legacy is now part of the city’s history.

Early arrivals gathered for the grand farewell, and soon, the line stretched around the block—a clear sign of how much the restaurant meant to the community.

Founded in 1908 within the Pacific Electric Building, Cole’s became famous for its roast beef served on soft bread and dipped in savory juices. It’s a friendly rivalry with Philippe’s, another establishment that claims the same origin story.

Owner Ced Moses cited rising costs, challenges from the pandemic, labor issues, and dwindling foot traffic downtown as factors leading to the closure.

But Saturday wasn’t just about nostalgia. Customers like Bryson Pintado showed up to support the local culinary scene. “A lot of traditional places are closing, and I want to be part of that community,” he shared.

As the time drew closer to the final service, many reflected on the experience. One diner described the sandwich as not necessarily the best they’ve ever had but more a taste of Hollywood’s historical charm.

Cole’s boasted a wood-paneled dining room and a late-night bar, drawing patrons for generations. Alexandra Pinedo, another customer, expressed that the sandwich felt “like a hug in a way,” while her partner, Edgar de la Torre, appreciated the dish for its classic simplicity.

Throughout the Farewell Weekend, which aimed to raise funds for the Independent Hospitality Coalition, many hoped that Cole’s legacy might not be entirely over. There’s still a chance for it to reopen, as several interested buyers have come forward.
