Uniform Color Controversy in Friendly Match
The United States faced criticism following a 5-2 defeat against Belgium in a friendly match on Saturday. The clash of uniform colors created confusion for players, and fans watching at home struggled to distinguish between the two teams.
Both teams took the opportunity to showcase their new World Cup uniforms during the match, which is set to take place in Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
The U.S. team sported a design featuring red and white stripes reminiscent of the American flag, while Belgium wore light blue jerseys with pink details.
Belgian winger Jeremy Doku expressed his frustration on national television, noting, “There were times when we had to look twice, especially if we wanted to play quickly. I would have preferred a brighter color.”
Meanwhile, U.S. captain Christian Pulisic shared his difficulties, saying, “A lot of times when you get the ball and look up, you can’t really see anything. You just have to make a decision based on the color of your shirt. That’s how it works, and when it’s very similar, it’s hard.”
Following the match, Belgian television issued an apology to viewers, and analyst Marc Degrise criticized the event organizers for the oversight.
Degrise commented, “Football is a product that has to be sold. Everything must improve constantly. Yet, they made the game frustrating because of the uniforms. This is contrary to the whole commercial aspect. It’s really unacceptable.”
U.S. Soccer claimed that photos of both teams’ uniforms had been shared with referees prior to the match, who did not see any conflict.
Belgian media revealed that the issue stemmed from the U.S. insisting on debuting their new red and white kit, which clashed with Belgium’s chosen colors. Reports indicated that both teams were eager to unveil their new designs, but Belgium proposed wearing their traditional red, which wasn’t an option for the U.S. given its red stripes.
There was a possibility for the U.S. to don dark blue uniforms, but that would not align with their commercial plans, according to the reports.
