Kountry Wayne discusses his new Netflix special Nostalgia and his approach to clean comedy.

Country Wayne Reflects on His Comedy Journey Ahead of ‘Nostalgia’ Special

As he gears up for the release of his second stand-up special, *Nostalgia*, Country Wayne had a chat about his ascent to becoming a headliner, the role of faith in his journey, and how his ten kids shape his comedic material.

Wayne, who describes himself as a “redneck,” hails from Millen, Georgia, a relaxed town where folks enjoy backyard barbecues and card games. Originally named Dwayne Jamar Collie, he started his career in music before venturing into comedy with Instagram sketches in 2014. Remarkably fast, he gained over a million followers in under a year.

Known for his clean comedy—no drinking, smoking, or swearing—Wayne finds humor rooted in real-life experiences. His unique family dynamics, including his ten children and their mother, provide a trove of relatable material that aligns with his aim of keeping comedy light-hearted and accessible.

Bringing Back Laughter

“I just want to make people laugh,” he shared. “It’s about escaping bills and heartache for a moment.” His special, *Nostalgia*, seeks to revive “good comedy” as he feels some acts today are too focused on being edgy.

Wayne does not view himself as a political comedian. He is all about laughter, stating, “I’m here to entertain everyone.” Inspired by legends like Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle, he has been honing his storytelling skills since launching his first Netflix special, *A Woman’s Prayer*, in 2023.

The Influence of Family

“They call me clean, but I get pretty raw when it comes to my family,” Wayne explained. He emphasizes empathy in his work, crafting stories everyone can relate to. His loved ones are aware that their lives might become comedy fodder.

He recounted one story about his ex-partner getting annoyed after he shared a moment involving her broken tooth. “I couldn’t help but talk about it; it was too good not to!” he laughed. Despite the tensions, he noted, “She got her teeth fixed, so it’s all good now.”

Fatherhood’s Impact

Although he finds humor in family life, Wayne takes fatherhood seriously. “Being a dad changes everything. I had to step up; it’s about providing for those little ones,” he reflected.

He insists that he’s serious about his work, saying, “When I leave my house, it’s all business. I have responsibilities.”

Faith and Discipline

Wayne, a long-time vegan and someone who’s rarely indulged in drinking or smoking, attributes his success to faith and discipline. “Coming from a small town with my background, talent isn’t the only factor,” he insisted, emphasizing the importance of perseverance.

Looking back, he credits his healthy beliefs, stating, “I was never rich or famous, but my faith is what kept me going.” As he navigated temptations, he found that sticking to his values came naturally, even as he achieved fame.

From Rapping to Comedy Stardom

His rise from a struggling rapper to a digital comedy star showcases his authentic approach to branding. Initially trying to carve a path in music around 2014, Wayne shifted to comedy after realizing his limitations in rap. “I thought, why not make comedy videos?” he recalled, and within a short time, he went viral, attracting a significant following.

His digital empire now produces around 40 videos daily, but live performances have become his true passion. He mentions feeling a sense of accomplishment after earning $20,000 in just two days performing stand-up, a moment he considered a turning point in his career.

The Quest for Authenticity

Wayne’s credibility stems from being genuine. “People know I’m not manipulated by the industry,” he said. He believes anyone can find success by staying true to themselves. “Have faith and work hard. It’s achievable,” he encouraged.

He connects with audiences by being his authentic self, saying, “In a world of negativity, I try to bring positivity. It resonates with people, offering them hope.”
