Oversight group states railroad union leaders support Democrats instead of pro-Trump members

Union Faces Criticism Over Leadership’s Political Alignment

One of the leading railroad unions in the U.S. is under intense scrutiny following a report from a watchdog group that claims its leadership is acting counter to the beliefs of its members, many of whom are in favor of President Trump’s policies.

The American Accountability Foundation (AAF) has released findings suggesting that the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Railroad Workers (BLET) is steered by leaders who support the Democratic Party, even though a substantial portion of the membership appears to lean towards Trump. The report indicates that this disconnect has led to feelings of betrayal among members.

Highlighting the union’s endorsement of the Harris-Waltz ticket for the upcoming elections, the report cites connections to Democratic figures like Bernie Sanders and Sherrod Brown, who is seeking reelection.

While BLET has historically supported the Republican Party, a recent report applauds bipartisan initiatives, such as the Railroad Safety Act. However, it notes that the union has criticized Trump-era policies, particularly around regulations and immigration issues.

Social media activity from BLET shows numerous instances where the union has publicly opposed decisions from the Trump administration, which the AAF report deems as evidence of “woke leadership.” It mentions that leading up to the 2024 elections, BLET sent out messages criticizing Trump’s administration while lauding Biden’s policies.

Financially, the union’s backing of Democratic candidates has also raised eyebrows, with more than $26 million reportedly spent on political activities in recent years. Alarmingly, a staggering 99% of donations from union committees have gone to the Democratic Party.

Interestingly, even after the clear support for Trump among union members became apparent, BLET’s leadership continued to make donations predominantly to Democratic causes. In 2016, the union donated significantly to the Democratic National Committee while neglecting the Republican National Committee entirely.

Some argue that this growing divide reflects a broader shift in U.S. politics, where traditional union leadership aligns with leftist ideals while many working-class members identify more with Trump. The report also delves into financial management, criticizing the union for spending excessive amounts on hotels and retreats rather than focusing on member benefits.

Polling suggests a shift in sentiment among union members, with a notable percentage expressing support for Trump—a sentiment underscored by a recent Teamsters poll showing a clear split in favor of the former president.

Concerns about executive pay have also surfaced, as some union leaders reportedly earn over $200,000 annually, while both the president and vice president make over $300,000.

Tom Jones, president of AAF, commented that many union members feel their leaders have mismanaged union dues to further political agendas instead of addressing the genuine needs of workers.

In response to the report, a spokesperson for BLET stated that the organization wouldn’t comment on perceived inaccuracies from groups lacking accountability.
