Stephen A. Smith Shares His Views on Biological Men Competing with Women

Stephen A. Smith Addresses Transgender Athlete Debate

Stephen A. Smith from ESPN made a strong statement concerning the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports during a recent episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher.” He emphasized that there should be no involvement of biological males in women’s sports, stating, “Biological males should not be competing against biological girls in sports.”

On this March 27 episode, Smith raised concerns about the implications for young women in sports, asserting, “What about protecting young women? Young women standing up to biological men? There’s no excuse for that.”

He highlighted Leah Thomas, a former swimmer from the University of Pennsylvania, as a significant example. According to him, Thomas was previously a man, ranked over 400 in the world rankings, but after transitioning, achieved the number one spot in women’s swimming. “Does it really take Einstein to realize that there’s something wrong with that picture?” he questioned.

When Bill Maher inquired about whether this controversy might become a political issue for Democrats, Smith confidently replied, “That’s their own problem,” which received a round of applause from the audience.

These remarks came shortly after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) declared it would require genetic testing for all athletes in women’s categories before the 2028 Los Angeles Games. IOC President Kirsty Coventry expressed concerns about the fairness of allowing biological males to compete in women’s events. The White House commended President Trump’s decision regarding this issue.

Smith has been vocal about these views for over a year, noting in a previous appearance that while he supports LGBTQ rights, he sees the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports as a violation of women’s rights.

Additionally, in early 2025, President Trump enacted an executive order aimed at excluding biological males from women’s sports, requiring federal agencies to apply Title IX based on the sex assigned at birth. Following this, the NCAA also adjusted its policies accordingly.
