Concerns Over U.S. Becoming More Like North Korea

During a Saturday discussion, CNN political commentator SE Kapp expressed worry that the United States is increasingly mirroring North Korea under President Donald Trump’s administration. North Korea is widely recognized as a severely repressive nation, and Kapp stated on CNN’s “Table for Five” that he feels the U.S. is heading in a similar direction, standing firm on his views even when former Republican City Councilman Joe Borelli labeled his comments as “extreme.”

Kapp articulated his fears about a militarized America, saying, “We should not desire a militarized nation where our streets, votes, and airports reflect that.” He voiced his deep concerns regarding subtle indicators suggesting that the U.S. was embracing practices reminiscent of North Korea. He mentioned scenarios like Trump signing currency or favoring specific media at Pentagon briefings as troubling signs.

“When did we wish to emulate North Korea? This should alarm everyone,” Kapp added. “It’s not just about partisanship; it’s genuinely frightening.” He urged people to reflect on their surroundings, questioning whether American citizens want armed individuals patrolling the streets, creating a sense of fear. In his view, the Department of Justice is an essential and independent branch of government, crucial to maintaining democracy.

His remarks followed questions about the potential for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence at polling places during upcoming midterm elections. Borelli challenged Kapp’s extreme analogy, trying to steer the conversation back to the topic, but Kapp firmly responded, “No, it’s not.”

On CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, White House Border Czar Tom Homan did not provide details regarding discussions on ICE’s involvement at polling stations. When asked whether President Trump had directed ICE to prepare for polling place presence, Homan clarified, “I have never discussed it with President Trump, and Secretary Markwayne Mullin has not participated in any conversations about it.”
