Teenagers Arrested for Attempted Bombing in Paris

Authorities in France have taken three teenagers into custody following an effort to bomb a Bank of America building in Paris.

Police in the 8th Ward managed to interrupt a suspect trying to set off a homemade explosive right before 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, as reported by ABC News. The device was made up of 650 grams of gunpowder attached to two fuel containers held together with tape.

ABC News also indicated that another individual appeared to be standing nearby, recording the event before fleeing when officers approached. Two additional suspects were arrested on Sunday, one of whom is thought to be the person who filmed the incident. All three individuals are minors.

The suspect apprehended at the scene informed police that he hailed from Senegal and was indeed a minor, as reported by CBS News. He claimed that someone had recruited him via Snapchat and had paid him roughly $692 for the act. French authorities are currently verifying his identity.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated on BFM television that he suspects the Middle East conflict may have been a motive for the incident, with additional sources indicating it could be tied to Iranian threats against U.S. and Israeli interests in Europe, as noted by France 24.

This event in Paris appears to fit a broader trend observed in nearby nations. For example, Dutch officials believe Iran was involved in recruiting four young men arrested for a synagogue bombing in Rotterdam. Moreover, an unidentified group linked to Tehran recently claimed responsibility for setting fire to a volunteer ambulance associated with a Jewish organization in London.

In response to the bombing attempt, France’s National Counter-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office has initiated a formal inquiry into the case, focusing on attempted arson connected to terrorist activities, explosives production, and related plots. The Paris judicial police and domestic intelligence services are also engaged in the investigation.
