Providence basketball player taken into custody for domestic violence allegation

A basketball player from Providence College was arrested early Sunday and faces charges related to domestic violence and disorderly conduct.

Duncan Powell, a fifth-year student who recently wrapped up his college basketball career, is accused of threatening his ex-girlfriend and a friend, as reported by local news.

Police in Cranston, Rhode Island, were called to Plainfield Pike after 1 a.m. Sunday.

The woman informed officers that her friend’s ex-boyfriend was outside with a firearm, later identified as Powell.

Powell’s ex-girlfriend alleged that he had punched her earlier that day and showed the police a large bruise on her leg as evidence.

She also claimed that a tracking device was found in her car and stated that Powell had been stalking her on multiple occasions.

Witnesses reported that Powell initially threatened to kill everyone at the residence, including himself.

He reportedly stayed at the front of the house for about four minutes before leaving.

While police spoke with his ex-girlfriend, Powell continued to make phone calls. When an officer answered her phone to speak with him, they heard him walking and then saw a guard moving toward them with his hands in his sweatshirt.

Powell was arrested at gunpoint but was reportedly unarmed at that moment. However, his vehicle was found parked near his ex-girlfriend’s apartment.

This season, Powell averaged just under five points and three rebounds per game while struggling with a shooting percentage of 36.4%. He had previously played four seasons at other colleges, emphasizing that he had problems in his performance.

Earlier this year, he was also suspended for three games following an incident during a game against St. John’s, which involved a confrontation with a former player.
