Evanna Howell, who works for Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing NASCAR team, was arrested on Saturday after allegedly hitting an elderly man with a golf cart at Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina.
The incident reportedly took place around 1:49 p.m., as detailed in a Concord Police Department arrest report. Howell was driving the cart when she “veered in the opposite direction” and entered through a gate.
According to police, two traffic controllers tried to get her attention as she went the wrong way. However, Howell swerved, struck a curb, and then hit a pedestrian, pushing him into a fence and running him over.
The victim, identified as 77-year-old Dennis Manchester, was taken to a nearby hospital with several serious injuries. His current condition is unclear, but he mentioned he hasn’t discussed the incident with anyone.
Howell faces a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury and is being held in jail. Her mug shot revealed she was wearing a 23XI Racing sweatshirt at the time of her arrest.
NASCAR has announced that Howell has been “indefinitely suspended,” mentioning behavioral issues without further details. 23XI Racing, co-owned by Jordan and Denny Hamlin, has not released any public comments regarding the situation.
According to her LinkedIn profile, Howell worked as a senior account manager for 23XI Racing. She was released on $125,000 bail and is set to appear in court for a probable cause hearing on June 16. Attempts to reach Howell and her lawyer for further comments were unsuccessful.
