Duke announcer demands a penalty on UConn after a game-ending shot

Duke Fans React to Elite Eight Drama

David Shumate, the radio voice of Duke University, stirred up emotions among fans after recounting the heartbreaking loss to Connecticut in the Elite Eight.

Shumate’s tone dropped significantly when Braylon Mullins of the Huskies nailed a deep three-pointer in the closing moments, sealing Connecticut’s 73-72 victory. Adding to the drama, a technical foul was called on Malachi Smith for leaping onto the court after the shot.

“Seven seconds gone, I tried to pass it ahead but missed! Connecticut took the ball!” Shumate exclaimed. “Only two seconds left! Mullins for the win! He hits it with just three-tenths of a second to go! Malachi Smith burst off the bench! That should be a technical, but it’s too late – Connecticut leads 73-72.”

Despite the intensity of the moment, Shumate didn’t revisit the technical foul in the post-game conference. The Huskies quickly finished out the game, securing their spot in the Final Four set for Indianapolis.

In stark contrast, Mike Crispino, the UW radio broadcaster, was jubilant as the game concluded. He shouted, “Boozer with the steal! Mullins makes it! A long-range three! Oh, it’s in! Mullins scores! What a crazy finish!” His excitement was palpable as he celebrated Mullins’ incredible shot from 35 feet, solidifying his place in college basketball lore.

While the Huskies celebrated one of the most remarkable comebacks in regional history, it’s worth noting that Louisville once faced an even steeper challenge, overcoming a 20-point deficit to defeat West Virginia in 2005.

Next up for the Huskies is a matchup against Illinois State on Saturday, where they’ll aim for a chance to move to the national championship for the third time in four years.
