Tragic Loss of Ball State Football Player
Just a week ago, an 18-year-old football player from Ball State found himself caught in a shooting incident in Tallahassee, Florida, which ultimately led to his death from the injuries he sustained.
The university shared the unfortunate news on Sunday morning, confirming that freshman defensive back Gavin Yates-Lyons passed away on Saturday.
The school expressed their heartfelt condolences in a statement on social media, saying, “We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, coaches, teammates, and everyone who held him close. May they find solace and strength in this difficult moment.”
Peter Rowley, Ball State’s assistant athletic director and chief of staff for football operations, took to social media to remember Lyons, calling him “an extraordinary person.”
He added, “Our hearts are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. We would like to thank Ball State’s administration, staff, and community for supporting our players and staff as we grieve.”
A native of Greensville, Florida, Yates-Lyons graduated early from Lowndes County High School in South Georgia and started at Ball State University in January to join the football team’s spring practice.
He had recently returned home to attend his high school graduation ceremony on May 22, but tragically found himself involved in a shooting the very next day.
The incident occurred during an “unofficial pop-up party” in a parking lot near the Legacy Suites Apartments, where gunfire broke out, injuring three individuals, including Yates-Lyons. He was rushed to a nearby hospital with severe injuries that ultimately proved fatal.
As of now, the suspect is still at large.
In a compassionate act, Yates-Lyons became an organ donor, according to family reports shared with local news outlets. They described him as having a “courteous personality, kind heart, and deep love for family and friends.”
