Nets Secure Victory, But Lottery Odds Decline
The Brooklyn Nets have, unfortunately, set a record for the longest losing season in NBA history.
While they broke a 10-game losing streak with a 116-99 win against the Sacramento Kings at Barclays Center, the victory came at a cost.
Now sitting at 18-57, they slid down to third place in the lottery standings with only seven games left this season—where those standings mean everything.
Currently, the Nets are just one game behind Indiana and half a game behind Washington in the lottery race. Ironically, they won against the Kings in a game it might have been better for them to lose, now finding themselves 0.5 games back from fourth-place Sacramento.
Coach Jordi Fernandes commented on the game, expressing his satisfaction with the team’s “aggressivity, physicality, and being aggressive from the beginning.” He noted that everyone contributed to what he termed a “very positive result.”
Leading the charge, Ochai Agbaji scored a season-high 18 points in just 25 minutes off the bench, finishing with a plus-20. Nolan Traore followed with 17 points and six assists, while rookie Drake Powell added 16 points, shooting impressively from beyond the arc.
At one point, Brooklyn held a 50-23 lead thanks to a layup from Nic Claxton, even stretching the edge to 27 points. Noah Clowney also had a commendable performance with 15 points and seven rebounds, marking his return from a wrist injury.
Clowney explained their strategy, mentioning, “We just talked. They run a lot of similar things to us, so it’s easy to predict what they’ll do.” He added the importance of staying connected and communicating effectively.
Meanwhile, Traore has been steady recently, averaging 11.3 points and five assists over the last 24 games.
However, the Nets’ roster faced challenges, missing key players like Egor Demin, Michael Porter Jr., Dayron Sharpe, and rookie Danny Wolf due to injuries. Additionally, Josh Minott and Jalen Wilson were ruled out last minute.
On the other hand, the Kings were also hit hard, missing stars like Russell Westbrook, Domantas Sabonis, and several others.
