UCLA Softball Team Bounces Back with Dominant Win
It’s tough to hold back a strong offensive performance, especially when the team is swinging for the fences.
The UCLA softball team made quite the comeback, shaking off a disappointing outing in the Women’s College World Series. They avoided elimination in spectacular fashion.
In a resounding victory, the Bruins triumphed over the University of Arkansas with an 11-0 score, achieving a five-run rule at Devon Park in Oklahoma City. This marked not only a shutout but also the largest win in the conference’s history.
During the game, they showcased an impressive display of power hitting.
Megan Grant contributed significantly, smashing a three-run home run in a nine-point second inning. That brought her total to a remarkable 42 homers for the season, setting a new NCAA record. Additionally, with her 91 career home runs, she has now surpassed the previous school record held by Stacey Neubman.
In the same inning, Sujin Berry also hit a three-run homer. Meanwhile, Kaniyah Bragg nearly added to the tally, as her hit ricocheted off the right field wall and came back into play—just barely missing the mark.
UCLA (53-9) sent 14 batters to the plate during the second inning, marking the second time this postseason they’ve scored nine runs in one inning. It also tied for the second-most runs in a single inning recorded by the Bruins in WCWS history.
Alina Garcia and Jolina Lamar each added to the home run count, extending UCLA’s NCAA single-season record to a stunning 206 home runs.
What It Means
This win was a significant rebound after their opening loss in the WCWS.
It also provided much-needed relief for pitcher Taylor Tinsley, allowing her a break after an intense two-game stretch.
Turning Point
After a calm first inning for both teams, everything changed in the second. Garcia sparked the offense with a home run to center field, igniting a wave of celebration from the dugout. By the time Grant and Berry added their home runs later in the inning, the Bruins were on a roll.
MVP: Taylor Tinsley
Tinsley, UCLA’s ace and the pitcher the Bruins consistently rely on, completed two consecutive full games with strong performances.
After giving up six runs against Alabama, she was even more formidable against the Razorbacks. In five scoreless innings, she allowed just three hits, along with two strikeouts and two walks.
Next Steps
The Bruins are set to face the loser of the Alabama-Nebraska game on Sunday at 4 p.m. PT.
The matchup will be available to watch on ESPN.
