White House Urges Congress to Act on DHS Funding
The White House is urging Congress to return from their Easter break to address funding issues affecting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). They claim the ongoing conflict is causing disruptions at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) operations and harming access to airports nationwide.
During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt stated, “Nothing will return to normal unless Democrats do the right thing and fully fund this agency again.” She emphasized that the President took action to alleviate the crisis in air travel and that it’s essential for Congress, particularly Democrats, to ensure DHS employees receive adequate pay moving forward.
The funding stalemate has lasted over six weeks, leading to reports of TSA staff shortages and longer security lines at various airports. Some ICE agents have even been deployed to assist in these situations.
Discussions around DHS funding and immigration matters hit a standstill, with Congress departing without reaching an agreement. This has resulted in accusations being exchanged between both parties, as pressure mounts from unions and aviation authorities amidst travel disruptions.
President Trump has made it clear that he finds no logical reason for the Senate to be on break without resolving DHS funding during the Easter period. Leavitt concluded by saying, “If Congress comes back and takes a stand against the Democrats, the President has indicated he’d host a big Easter dinner at the White House. The Democrats have repeatedly voted against funding DHS, which is detrimental given the current global context. The dedicated personnel in this department need fair compensation.”
The President is keen on getting Congress to resolve these issues promptly.
