Mail-in Voting Error Sparks Republican Concerns in Maryland
A recent issue with mail-in voting has raised alarms among House Republicans after numerous Maryland residents received primary ballots meant for the wrong party. This prompted Republican lawmakers to seek answers and clarity from the state’s election officials.
On Tuesday, Brian Still, the Chairman of the House Administration Committee, along with Vice Chair Laurel Lee, sent a letter to the Maryland State Board of Elections (SBOE). They expressed concerns about the potential for ballot printing fraud and questioned if there are sufficient safeguards in place to ensure the accuracy of mail-in ballots.
This communication came on the heels of a revelation from the SBOE that an unspecified number of Maryland voters were sent incorrect mail-in ballots due to a vendor error ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial primary on June 23. In response, officials announced they would resend ballots to over 500,000 voters who may have been impacted, asserting they are taking strong measures to ensure that only one vote is counted.
Republican lawmakers have called for greater transparency from the state election board. The letter highlighted that while the SBOE is taking steps to invalidate the original ballots, issuing more than 500,000 new ones could put a significant strain on logistics and, more critically, could jeopardize public trust in the electoral process.
Members of the House Administration Committee have requested that Maryland Elections Director Jared DeMarinis respond to their inquiries by June 9. Other signatories to the letter include Representatives Morgan Griffith, Greg Murphy, Stephanie Bice, Mike Carey, and Mary Miller.
DeMarinis defended the state’s response to the vendor errors, emphasizing that mail-in voting is a necessary facet of the election process. He pointed out that with over 500,000 voters requesting mail-in ballots, the aim is to eliminate any doubts about their accuracy, which is why they arranged to ship replacement ballots.
As of Friday, DeMarinis confirmed that the distribution of replacement ballots has begun.
This incident has drawn the attention of President Donald Trump, who has called for a Justice Department investigation into the Maryland State Board of Elections. He publicly criticized Governor Wes Moore, labeling him as “corrupt” and suggesting, without evidence, that the voting errors were intentionally crafted to benefit Democrats.
Furthermore, the Republican National Committee (RNC) has denounced the ballot printing error as an example of “mismanagement of elections” and has mobilized its election integrity division in response.
In light of these developments, the RNC alongside the Maryland Republican Party is amplifying efforts across the state to safeguard the electoral process, which includes setting up voter hotlines, providing legal oversight, and enhancing voter education efforts.
President Trump has historically opposed no-excuse mail-in voting and took action earlier this year with an executive order aimed at restricting this practice.
As of now, the SBOE and Governor Moore have not provided comments regarding the matter.
