Max Fried leads Yankees to win without allowing any runs against Mariners

Yankees Dominate Mariners in 5-0 Victory

SEATTLE — Max Fried faced some challenges during his first start of the season, although he didn’t give up any earned runs.

His follow-up performance on Tuesday night continued in a similar vein, but this time everything went smoothly.

Fried, showcasing stellar pitching, led the Yankees with seven shutout innings in a 5-0 win over the Mariners at T-Mobile Park. This victory added to the Yankees’ impressive start to the season.

This marks the Yankees’ third shutout win in five games, putting them in rare company as only the second team in MLB history to concede three runs or fewer in their first five games, joining the St. Louis Cardinals from 1943.

Fried has been integral in achieving two of those shutout victories. Following his 6⅓ scoreless innings against the Giants in the season opener, he outperformed himself on Tuesday, allowing just three singles, one walk, and one hit batter while striking out six over his relatively few innings.

The Mariners didn’t reach second base until the seventh inning and didn’t threaten further against him.

Brent Headrick and Tim Hill both contributed with effective pitching as well, setting the stage for Wednesday’s decisive game. The Yankees plan to send Cam Schlitzer to the mound, looking for another solid outing.

The Yankees’ rotation is currently boasting a 0.66 ERA over the first five games, having permitted just two runs in a total of 27⅓ innings.

Similar to the season opener, Fried got his team going early with significant offensive support, as the Yankees managed to break through against Mariners ace Logan Gilbert after being stifled by Luis Castillo the night before.

Giancarlo Stanton was again a key player, finishing the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double, making him the fourth player in Yankees history to record multiple hits in the first five games of a season.

The veteran DH now has 10 hits out of 20 at-bats for the season.

Ben Rice had a notable game, going 2-for-2 with two hits and two walks, reaching base four times. Cody Bellinger also had a solid performance, hitting 2-for-3 with two hits and one walk, contributing two runs as well.

Trent Grisham shined with his best game so far, making a great defensive play and hitting well, collecting two hits on four at-bats.

After struggling with just five hits and one run in a prior loss, the Yankees quickly improved their performance against a formidable pitcher. Bellinger initiated a rally with a single off Gilbert, leading to Rice’s double that took the Yankees into a scoring position.

Stanton’s timely hitting created significant impact once again, driving in Rice for a 2-0 lead with another base hit that found the right field line.

Bellinger attempted to steal second base in the third inning but was thwarted by a well-placed throw from Cal Lowry, who was supported by shortstop Leo Rivas. Nevertheless, Bellinger rebounded in the sixth inning; after another steal attempt led to Lowry’s throw going awry, Grisham scored from third, extending the Yankees’ lead to 3-0.

This triggered a three-run rally that included Stanton’s RBI double and Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s RBI single.
