Seattle Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Train Incident

A man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to push someone onto the tracks at a Seattle light rail station. This alarming incident was recorded on video.

The event took place at the Northgate light rail station. While a man waited for a northbound train, the suspect, identified as Elisio Melendez, approached him from behind and attempted to shove him onto the tracks just as the train was arriving.

Prosecutors assert that this assault seemed premeditated. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Melendez timing his actions closely, waiting for the train to enter the station before pushing the victim.

Fortunately, the victim managed to pull himself back moments before what could have been a fatal fall.

However, the incident did not end there. The footage reveals that Melendez tried once more to push him before fleeing the scene.

The King County Sheriff’s Office praised the Sound Transit personnel for promptly removing a potentially dangerous individual from public spaces, characterizing the footage as quite shocking.

Though he escaped initially, investigators tracked Melendez down through surveillance footage and diligent investigation. They located him at a mental health facility close to his residence. On March 24, law enforcement identified him, and he was subsequently taken into custody. His clothing was also found to match what he wore during the incident.

In custody, Melendez is being held on a $750,000 bail while awaiting trial for attempted second-degree murder. Official records indicate that charges were formally filed on March 26, and the case is still active.

A court-ordered competency evaluation is underway to ascertain whether Melendez can stand trial and comprehend the charges against him. An arraignment hearing will be scheduled following the evaluation process.

This situation also sheds light on Melendez’s troubling history. He faced charges in a domestic violence case back in 2019, but was deemed incompetent to stand trial. After several mandated treatment sessions, the case was dismissed in early 2021, and he was placed under civil detention at a hospital. He remained there until January 2022, when officials decided he could transition to a less restrictive facility.

Prosecutors noted that if a defendant is declared incompetent, there is no legal avenue to proceed with a criminal case unless competency can be restored. They also clarified that undergoing a competency evaluation doesn’t automatically mean the charges will be dropped; the case could drag on as efforts are made to restore the defendant’s ability to stand trial.

While it remains uncertain what motivated the attack or whether the victim was a specific target, investigators believe the approach was random.

The investigation is ongoing.
