Experts Warn About Injuries from Certain Sex Positions
It might not cross your mind, but engaging in sexual activity can lead to injuries—seriously. Research shows that over 60% of people have experienced some kind of injury during sex, as reported by a study conducted by Superdrug online doctor, which surveyed more than 1,000 individuals from the U.S. and Europe.
Some of the injuries sound pretty painful—I mean, think about things like penile fractures, tears to delicate areas, objects getting lodged in, or even just the typical pulled muscles and carpet burns.
The study highlighted that rough sex accounted for about 33% of injuries in men and 37% in women. Overexertion was also a significant factor, contributing to 19% of male injuries and 10% for females.
If you’re feeling a bit apprehensive about all this, it’s worth noting that certain positions carry a higher risk than others.
For women, doggy style topped the list, resulting in 20% of injuries, which sometimes led to vaginal tearing, bruises, or back pain. In contrast, missionary position caused 16% of injuries for women, resulting in soreness and cramped muscles, while it was even more hazardous for men, contributing to 19% of their injuries.
Interestingly, doggy style also caused 16% of injuries for men, and sex while standing accounted for about 8%. Additionally, the cowgirl position led to issues for both parties, causing 8% of male injuries and 6% for females. Notably, reverse cowgirl was linked to a whopping 25% of penile fractures.
On a positive note, some positions seem to be safer overall—like spooning, tabletop sex, and the kneeling wheelbarrow. But I can’t help but think maybe that’s just because they’re not as popular.
When it comes to injuries, particularly sensitive areas take the hit. Around 38% of men’s reported injuries were related to the penis, while more than half of the cases reported by women involved the vaginal area.
Why is Missionary a Higher-Risk Position, and How Can You Prevent Injuries?
According to sex expert Scotty Unfamous, missionary is a common go-to for many couples, but it can lead to injuries due to stress on the joints. He suggests using cushions or a rolled-up towel for added support, which could make a difference during the act.
Interestingly, escort Lilith Lodge mentioned that despite the risks, missionary is still the most requested position from her clients. She describes how most clients usually stick to what they know rather than exploring more adventurous options.
Lodge has openly talked about issues she sees in the bedroom, particularly the stigma surrounding erectile dysfunction—a problem affecting many men. She emphasizes that it’s important for individuals experiencing this to seek medical advice instead of ignoring it.
