Tragic Shooting Claims Life of Infant in Brooklyn
A 7-month-old girl was tragically shot and killed by a stray bullet while on a Brooklyn street Wednesday afternoon, according to police reports.
As two individuals on a moped approached the intersection of Moore Street and Humboldt Street, a third person opened fire, striking the infant, identified as Kaori Patterson Moore, while she was on the sidewalk. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Following the incident, the perpetrators fled the scene on the moped. While the New York City Police Department has one suspect in custody, they are seeking assistance from the public to locate a second person believed to be involved.
It appears that the shooting was gang-related, and the child was simply an unintended victim. At a press conference, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani expressed the profound grief felt by the family, stating, “There are no words that can heal the heartbreak this family is feeling right now. A life that had just begun was taken away in an instant.”
Details indicate that the shooting happened around 1:20 p.m. in a busy area where both adults and children were present. Fortunately, there were no other reported injuries from this incident.
Police Chief Jessica Tisch stated that the moped sped away but later crashed into an oncoming vehicle a couple of blocks from the scene. The collision caused injuries to one of the riders, who was taken to the hospital and is now in custody for an unrelated matter. Investigators believe he fits the description of the shooting suspect based on his clothing and appearance.
The other suspect has not yet been located. Although no firearm was recovered from the scene, police found two shell casings.
Chief Tisch remarked on the tragedy at the press conference, describing it as a “soul-shaking tragedy.” She mentioned, “As a mother, I cannot imagine the pain and sadness this family is feeling. It is indescribable.”
The police are reviewing neighborhood security footage to trace the moped’s route post-shooting. Mayor Mamdani stated that this incident serves as a harsh reminder of the need for more action against gun violence.
Authorities are encouraging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline.
