Explosion at Dallas Apartment Building

An explosion and subsequent fire at an apartment complex in Dallas on Thursday resulted in the tragic deaths of three individuals, including a child, and left at least three others injured, according to officials.

Dallas Fire Rescue reported that the deceased included two adult women and a child, all found in the debris. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

Three individuals were hospitalized, one in critical but stable condition, while the others have been released or are expected to be soon. Additionally, two more individuals were admitted to the hospital with minor injuries.

Earlier in the day, Deputy Fire Chief Mark Berry confirmed that there were fatalities but did not provide specifics on the total count at that time. The explosion occurred around 12:50 p.m. at a two-story apartment building in the Oak Cliff area, amid reports of a possible gas leak. Approximately 100 firefighters responded to the emergency.

“The fire has been controlled, but our crews are still conducting primary searches. We have drones in the air to locate any potential victims,” said Deputy Chief James Ross during a press briefing. “It’s still uncertain how many fatalities there may be.”

Witnesses heard explosions prior to the fire, although the precise cause is still unclear. Nearby buildings displayed shattered windows, and debris was scattered across the street.

“I was just relaxing in my living room when I heard a huge bang, like an explosion. Initially, I thought it was a car crash,” recalled Mike Sirois, a nearby resident. “My dog was acting oddly, like he was alerting me to check outside.” He added that upon stepping outside, he saw smoke rising from the direction of the Bishop Arts District.

Another local, Hawkeye, a radio personality, noted, “I saw flames and smoke visible from about two miles away. There were many ambulances on the scene.” The exact number of individuals who were inside the building at the time remains uncertain as authorities continue their investigation.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson urged the public to pray for those impacted by this incident. He commended the ongoing efforts of the fire and rescue personnel facing these challenging conditions.

The city has established a family reunion site at Adamson High School to assist those affected by the tragedy.
