Colbert Mocks Trump Supporters Amid Falling Approval Ratings
During a recent episode of “The Late Show,” host Stephen Colbert took a jab at President Donald Trump’s supporters. He highlighted a poll from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, revealing that Trump’s approval rating has dropped to 33%. After the audience cheered upon hearing this, Colbert remarked that other polls showed Trump’s numbers were also discouraging.
“On average, 47.2% of Americans strongly disapprove of him,” Colbert stated. However, he noted that there remains a segment—22.4%—that still backs the President.
Upon sharing this statistic, the audience responded with boos about the continued support for Trump. Colbert then turned to the camera, questioning, “Who are you?” He followed this with a lighthearted jab, saying, “Well, I want gas to be more expensive. I want the Kennedy Center to blow up. And I know this is a pipe dream, but maybe – just maybe – there’s a way to make Denmark hate me. I’d be very happy if the price of licorice went up, too.”
In a reaction to Colbert’s comments, White House Press Secretary Davis Engle expressed his disapproval, describing Colbert as lacking talent and citing his declining ratings, suggesting that CBS might cancel the show due to this.
The most recent national poll conducted by Fox News revealed that Trump’s approval rating stands at 41%, with a 59% disapproval rate. This is a widening gap compared to previous polls.
Colbert is known for his sharp criticism of Trump, using strong language to express his disdain. His remarks have intensified as it was recently announced that “The Late Show” is set to conclude in May.
Some have speculated that the show’s cancellation might be an attempt by CBS and its parent company, Paramount, to appease Trump.
