Court Gives 20-Year Prison Sentence to Pet Crematorium Owner for Deceiving Pet Owners

Maryland Man Sentenced for Pet Cremation Scam

A Maryland man, found to have operated a fraudulent pet cremation service, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Rodney Ward, 56, provided grieving pet owners with bags of gravel and construction debris instead of their pets’ remains.

On March 31, a judge in Baltimore County handed down the sentence, which also includes $12,000 in restitution. Ward had pleaded guilty in February to theft and malicious damage to property relating to his unlicensed business, Loving Care Pet Funeral and Cremation Service, located in Catonsville. Reports indicate that he collected around $13,000 from victims.

It was revealed that what Ward gave to pet owners were not the actual remains of their animals. Forensic anthropologists discovered that most of the materials were concrete powder and similar construction debris, with some containing human teeth and dental implants.

Judge Keith R. Traffer broke down the sentence, assigning five years for the theft and 15 years for the property damage charge. Prosecutor Adam Lippe expressed that the standard one-year recommendation felt “woefully inadequate.” Ward’s public defender claimed that his client genuinely regretted his actions, but the audience reportedly laughed at this statement.

During over an hour of victim testimonies, Ward exhibited no emotion or eye contact with the speakers, according to reports. The judge even offered to lessen the sentence if Ward would disclose the locations of the missing pets, but he declined to do so.

“No amount of money or punishment will bring us the peace we deserve; this should never have happened,” victim Nicky Pickens commented, expressing the community’s frustration.

Ward’s wife, who was also implicated, is set to stand trial on May 6. Additionally, state lawmakers are working on House Bill 564, which seeks to mandate registration for pet crematoriums in Maryland along with stricter record-keeping practices.
