Police Shooting in the Bronx
An NYPD officer shot and killed a man during an arrest related to a parole warrant at an apartment in the Bronx.
Lucien Colon, 44, was identified as the victim. A friend and neighbor claimed that the police acted without justification. However, police reports indicate that Colon did not lower a gun when asked.
Colon’s girlfriend described him as her “ride-along partner,” expressing grief over his death. He had a significant criminal background, with convictions for murder and rape in past years.
Officials stated that he had an outstanding arrest warrant and did not fulfill the criteria to be classified as a sex offender.
Officers with a warrant arrived at the apartment on Willis Street early in the morning. They were let in by Colon’s girlfriend, Maribel Antoinette. When they encountered Colon, he allegedly claimed to have a gun and refused orders to exit the room.
“The interaction lasted around one and a half minutes, and officers showed remarkable restraint while trying to de-escalate the situation,” according to NYPD Deputy Chief John Wilson.
Despite attempts to reason with him, Colon did not comply with several commands, leading one officer to shoot him. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Lincoln Hospital.
Authorities couldn’t confirm if the weapon was real, though they suggested it might be a BB gun. Images of the gun have been circulated through CrimeStoppers.
Antoinette accused officers of damaging the apartment door and claimed they failed to identify themselves during the incident. She expressed her anger, admitting she wished she had been in the room with Colon during the confrontation.
An NYPD spokesperson countered that body camera footage contradicts her claims, indicating that officers had lawful access to the apartment.
Colon’s friend insisted that the shooting was unwarranted and that he had been shot for no reason. Fortunately, no police officers were reported injured during the incident.
