Justice Samuel Alito’s Health Incident

Justice Samuel Alito of the U.S. Supreme Court was reportedly hospitalized recently after experiencing health issues. According to reports, he was taken to the hospital following a banquet held in his honor on March 20 at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, having faced an episode that required medical attention.

As for the timeline, Alito celebrated his 76th birthday just a couple of days ago, on April 1. It seems he was diagnosed with dehydration and received treatment before he returned home in Virginia that same night, accompanied by a security team. Further tests were conducted by his doctor to ensure his well-being.

In fact, just two weeks after this health scare, Alito attended oral arguments at the Supreme Court and appeared to be in good spirits. Notably, President Donald Trump was present in court on Alito’s birthday—a historical first for a sitting president, as justices discussed matters concerning birthright citizenship.

Alito, now the second oldest sitting justice after Clarence Thomas, who is 77, has been on the Supreme Court for two decades. He was appointed by former President George W. Bush, filling the seat of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, who was the first woman to serve on the court.

There’s ongoing speculation about whether Alito may resign before the end of Trump’s term in 2028, which would allow the president to appoint another justice. Although Alito has kept his plans vague, he did mention in October that he would be releasing a memoir titled *Thus Ordered: An Originalist View of the Constitution, the Courts, and Our Country*. This announcement has led some to wonder if it hints at a possible retirement in the near future.
