Mamdani faces criticism for remarks on the shooting death of a 7-month-old girl

Backlash Against NYC Mayor’s Comments on Baby’s Death

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani has encountered significant backlash following his remarks about the tragic death of a 7-month-old baby girl, Kaori Patterson Moore, who was struck by a stray bullet in Brooklyn.

The community reacted strongly to her death, urging for change, but Mamdani opted for familiar phrases that many found unhelpful. “This is not the first family in our city to feel this pain,” he stated during a press conference. He emphasized the heartache of losing children, saying, “Too many parents have had to bury their most loved ones. This cannot be accepted as normal in our city.”

However, critics interpreted his comments as a way of deflecting responsibility onto firearms rather than addressing the actions of criminals. Republican City Councilmember Vicki Palladino remarked, “It literally does nothing but condemn the criminals that our system releases onto the streets over and over again with no consequences.”

Rafael A. Mangaal, affiliated with the Manhattan Institute, criticized the mayor for framing the issue solely as a gun problem rather than acknowledging the violent gang culture at play. He noted that Mamdani’s political base includes those who support leniency towards criminals while advocating for stricter gun control.

In response to Mamdani’s statements, attorney Jim Walden expressed frustration over the mayor’s duality. “We should be focusing on the loss of families today,” Walden said, calling for more accountability. “But my blood burns every time you say, ‘Thank you, NYPD,’ after spending your career attacking them and coddling criminals.”

Meanwhile, the police arrested a suspect linked to the incident, reportedly captured on surveillance video during the shooting. The footage showed one person firing while being driven by another on a moped.

The family shared that the baby had just started to say “mama,” adding a layer of heartbreak to this tragedy.
