Brooklyn Robbery Turned Fatal After Victim Fights Back

Last week in Brooklyn, a former convict armed with a knife unleashed chaos when he attacked a victim during a robbery. The incident unfolded as the assailant, Dan Costume, 34, who had recently been released from prison, entered an unlocked apartment in Flatbush late Friday night.

The resident, aged 45, had just come home from playing soccer. At the time, his wife was briefly out running an errand, leaving the door ajar. Upon returning from the bathroom, the tenant found Costume attempting to steal various valuables, including two cellphones and a laptop.

A relative recounted that the family was understandably shocked to discover a stranger in their home. In an effort to retrieve their belongings, the tenant confronted the intruder, putting his arm around Costume from behind in a bid to disarm him.

Things escalated quickly. The attacker bit the victim’s hand and cheek, then pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the back of the neck. However, the victim managed to regain control of the situation.

Reportedly, the tenant was able to disarm Costume and, in a twist of fate, used the intruder’s own knife to stab him in the thigh and lower back. After the struggle, the tenant forced Costume out of the apartment and into the hallway. The thief fled down the stairs, leaving a trail of blood and dropping some of the stolen items.

Costume collapsed outside the building, and emergency medical personnel transported him to Kings County Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Meanwhile, the victim received treatment for his wounds and was released from the same hospital.

The resident did suffer significant injuries, including bite marks and cuts that required staples, but he has been recuperating.

In light of the event, sources indicated that prosecutors opted not to file charges against the tenant, believing he acted in self-defense. Costume’s family, however, shared that they had been estranged from him for years and had been searching for him before they received the grim news from the police.

Prior records reveal that Costume had been released on conditional parole in October 2024 after serving a lengthy prison sentence for attempted robbery in Brooklyn. The incident has left many unsettled, highlighting the unpredictable nature of violence and survival in urban settings.

As the victim continues his recovery, family members stress that what happened was a split-second decision of self-defense, underscoring how quickly situations can spiral out of control.
