Tragic Loss in the Drag Community
One of the participants in the forthcoming season of “Drag Race: Philippines” has tragically passed away at the age of 27, leading to the cancellation of the season after production had started.
The drag queen known as Misua, whose real name was Jason Elvie Tai, died in her sleep earlier this week. The reason for her death hasn’t been revealed yet.
World of Wonder, the production company behind RuPaul’s Drag Race and its various versions globally, shared the heartbreaking news on social media.
“We are heartbroken to learn that Misua, the talented queen who was set to join Season 4 of Drag Race: Philippines, passed away in her sleep on April 2nd,” the post stated, accompanied by Misua’s photo. “She brought light, artistry, and joy to those around her, and she will be sorely missed.”
They also mentioned that production has been halted to support the cast and crew during this heavy time. “Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and everyone who cherished her,” they added.
The company is in touch with her family, who have requested privacy as they navigate this tough situation.
The announcement drew many heartfelt messages from fellow “Drag Race” stars.
“Sending you lots of love,” Michelle Visage, a longtime judge in the U.S. version, wrote.
“Devastated! Sending love to everyone involved,” wrote Blue Hydrangea, a contestant from “Drag Race UK.”
“Sending so much love and light to Misua and her family,” expressed Sapphire Crystal, a finalist from Drag Race US.
Fans of the show have urged World of Wonder not to edit Misua’s appearances in the upcoming season, advocating for her legacy to be honored.
Misua’s family also shared their condolences on Facebook, stating, “He will be greatly missed by his loving family and close friends.”
This loss comes just weeks after another contestant from the Australian version, “Drag Race Down Under,” passed away after battling cancer.
Maxi Shields, 51, well-known in Sydney’s LGBT nightlife, gained global recognition after competing on the first season of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under in 2021. Her real name was Christopher Elliott, and she succumbed to throat cancer in February, receiving a heartfelt farewell procession down Oxford Street.
