Exciting MLB Debut for Connor Griffin

Connor Griffin kicked off the 2026 season as one of the most awaited players ready to make his mark in Major League Baseball.

This past Friday, the young Pirates player delivered on those expectations.

The promising 19-year-old prospect, who celebrates his birthday in just three weeks, achieved an RBI double in his very first at-bat in the majors, contributing to a 5-4 win against the Orioles. This victory pushed the Pirates’ record to 4-3.

“It was amazing,” Griffin shared, saying that winning felt like a significant achievement. “Definitely one of the best days of my life,” he added.

Notably, he became the first teenage position player in the majors since Juan Soto played for the Nationals back in 2018.

This crucial RBI double was part of a four-run surge in the second inning, which ultimately determined the game’s outcome.

Griffin, who was picked ninth overall in the 2024 draft, wrapped up the day with one hit in three at-bats, along with a walk, despite batting seventh in the lineup.

Coach Don Kelly expressed admiration for Griffin’s performance, stating, “He managed to settle in and really find his rhythm in just a few days. This is particularly impressive for a 19-year-old whose dream was to reach the big leagues.”

Earlier this season, Griffin put up an impressive .438/.571/.625 batting line in just five games with the Pirates’ Triple-A team in Indianapolis.

Last year, he played 122 games in the minors, batting .333 with 21 home runs, 94 RBIs, and 65 stolen bases. This performance earned him Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year Award.

A Jackson, Mississippi native, Griffin had initially committed to play for LSU, a top-tier baseball program, but he ultimately chose to skip college and jump straight into professional baseball.

When he joined the Pirates after the 2024 draft, he received a signing bonus of $6.53 million and is now finalizing a reported $140 million contract extension.
