Jimmer Fredette shares his reasons for believing Michigan will win the NCAA Tournament

Final Four Matches Set for Saturday in Indianapolis

The excitement is building for Saturday night as the Final Four takes place in Indianapolis. Teams like Michigan, Arizona, Illinois, and UW are vying for a chance to compete in the national championship game on Monday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

However, only one of these teams can emerge as the NCAA Tournament champion, and college basketball legend Jimmer Fredette has already made his prediction about whom he believes will cut down the nets come Monday night.

Fredette, a former star for BYU who had a standout moment during March Madness in 2011, has been following the tournament closely. He’s confident in the team he’s backing.

“Honestly, I’m really rooting for Michigan. I want them to win it all,” he mentioned in a recent chat, also highlighting his partnership with Coca-Cola and their “Fan Work is Thirst Work” campaign ahead of the tournament.

It’s hard not to admire the success of the No. 1 seed from the Midwest Region. Under second-year head coach Dusty May, Michigan has really shown its strength throughout the tournament.

Remarkably, the University of Michigan has triumphed in all four of its tournament games by double digits, including a commanding 95-62 victory over No. 6 Tennessee in the Elite Eight, ensuring their place in the Final Four. They are led by Jaxel Lendeborg, who has been effective, averaging 25 points per game during the tournament, despite a season average of 15.2.

Fredette expressed admiration for Michigan’s dynamic playstyle: “It’s unique in terms of size and length. They can approach games in various ways, which can be problematic for opponents, especially in a one-and-done scenario. They haven’t lost much this season, and when they did, it was usually close. You’re always in for a fight when facing them.”

He further noted that Coach May’s experience, particularly from his time reaching the Final Four at Florida Atlantic University in 2023, will be crucial for the Wolverines’ performance.

Looking at the competition, Arizona, as the No. 1 seed in the West, stands a good chance against Michigan on Saturday night. Michigan’s three losses and Arizona’s two, which came amidst a challenging Big 12 schedule, highlight the strengths of both teams.

Fredette believes this match is essentially a championship showdown before the official game. “Arizona is playing fantastic right now. These two teams resemble a national championship game within the tournament. They’re tall, athletic, and execute well. But, it’s always unpredictable.”

In the other Final Four bout, No. 2 UW shocked No. 1 Duke. Fredette also leans toward No. 3 Illinois for that game.

“UConn and Illinois State are both strong right now. My gut says Illinois will beat UConn, setting up a final between Illinois and Michigan. However, I think Michigan State might take it all. But who knows? I might be totally off base here. This tournament is full of surprises, after all.”

Fredette reflects on how this tournament truly embodies the essence of March Madness, delivering unexpected twists on the court.

The action in Indianapolis is set to kick off at 6:09 p.m. ET Saturday, featuring the University of Illinois and then Michigan against Arizona State.

A Drink for March Madness

The men’s tournament has been marked by thrilling moments, but it can also be taxing for fans. In response, Coca-Cola has introduced the “Fan Work is a Thirst Job” campaign, celebrating the devoted fans supporting the tournament’s Cinderella stories.

This year saw its share of upsets, such as High Point besting Wisconsin and VCU defeating UNC in overtime, keeping the spirit of March Madness alive.

To honor this sentiment, the Coca-Cola Glass Shipper—a cup shaped like a size 11 basketball sneaker—has been unveiled, celebrating teams and fans that have outperformed expectations during the tournament.

“That’s what March Madness represents,” Fredette remarked. “Coca-Cola aims to encapsulate the energy and connection fans have with their teams. The fans create an electric atmosphere, and everyone’s invested in their brackets and hoping for Cinderella stories.”
