Cara Delevingne Opens Up About Addiction in Recent Podcast
Cara Delevingne, during a revealing talk on Alex Cooper’s podcast, shared insights into what she described as one of the darkest times of her life. The actress confessed to using a drug called GHB daily, which ultimately led to severe health issues, including seizures. This wake-up call sparked her recovery journey.
While many fans might link her struggles to the troubling paparazzi photos from Burning Man in 2022, Delevingne emphasized that the situation was far worse than it appeared. At that time, she was using GHB to essentially sedate herself and cocaine to stay alert.
She had initially envisioned quitting after a grand 30th birthday celebration, thinking she could manage it alone. To her dismay, she realized just how reliant she had become on the substances.
Delevingne admitted her drug use was an escape from years of mental anguish stemming from childhood trauma and family issues. She described the initial thrill she felt when getting involved in performing arts and, later, how that excitement became a means of isolation.
Looking back, she reflected, “What began as a way to connect turned into a way to disappear.” Unfortunately, her substance use led her to a point where she was aware of the risk but felt unable to stop.
Despite having a successful career, she noted that personal struggles often went unnoticed. “When you seem successful, people assume everything is fine,” she explained, highlighting how public personas can mask deep-seated issues.
Delevingne revealed that even at the peak of her fame, she battled suicidal thoughts. Ironically, during what should have been a happy time, she felt immense guilt and worthlessness. “The darkest moments came when I was at my highest,” she shared, almost losing her life.
The viral image from Burning Man served as a pivotal point for her. She was not shocked by it, as she’d already confronted that version of herself for years. “Shame was overwhelming,” she stated, expressing how hidden parts of her life became exposed.
Now sober and working on new music, Delevingne hopes that sharing her journey will inspire others facing similar challenges. In a world where discussions about such struggles are rare, she aims to shed light on the realities of addiction and recovery.
