Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito Hospitalized After Illness
Justice Samuel Alito of the Supreme Court experienced health issues during a Federalist Society dinner on March 20, leading to his hospitalization in Philadelphia. This situation wasn’t disclosed at the time.
At 76, Alito was treated for dehydration and released the same evening, according to a statement from Supreme Court spokeswoman Patricia McCabe. He did not require a long hospital stay, as confirmed by sources. After his treatment, he returned home to Virginia with the assistance of a security guard.
“I decided to seek medical care out of an abundance of caution before making the three-hour journey back home,” McCabe explained. “Judge Alito received a thorough medical evaluation from his doctor and was back to work for oral arguments that following Monday.”
Reports indicate that during the dinner, Alito felt dizzy but did not lose consciousness. Attendees described the situation as unalarming, noting that he has not faced any health issues since then.
The dinner took place after a symposium titled “Examining the Jurisprudence of Samuel Alito,” held at the University of Pennsylvania School of Law. Witnesses noted that Alito seemed more fatigued than usual and chose not to deliver his prepared keynote speech, opting instead to stay seated while guests spoke with him.
During the same day, Alito was absent from certain court hearings but later appeared for oral arguments, where he seemed to be in good condition while engaging with lawyers.
There have been discussions about Alito contemplating his resignation, though no immediate action appears to be on the horizon. Former President Trump praised both Alito and Justice Thomas in December, urging them to stay on the Supreme Court. Should a vacancy arise, it would represent the president’s fourth opportunity to appoint a justice to the court.
