Corgis Take Over Huntington Beach for Annual Celebration
This past Saturday, Huntington Beach was alive with the presence of numerous corgis, as they gathered for their annual event that celebrates these short-eared, short-legged dogs.
Corgi Beach Day in Southern California attracted a crowd of excited canines alongside their passionate owners, making for a delightful day at the shore.
Participants showcased their festive outfits, ranging from tiny sombreros to Dodgers hats, adding to the fun atmosphere.
Dubbed “Earth’s Biggest Corgi Party,” the event has transformed from a modest gathering of 15 dogs back in 2012 into a sizable carnival that draws thousands of attendees twice annually.
This year’s theme, “Tiki Beach Porty,” added a playful, tropical vibe to the day filled with wagging tails.
On that sunny Saturday, the adorable dogs dashed around, playing with balls and frolicking in the waves while donning their creative costumes—everything from Dodger hats to bunny ears and ski goggles.
Some corgis even joined their owners for yoga classes, relishing the calming environment of Southern California.
Event-goers enjoyed a variety of food options from local vendors and food trucks, including pet supplies and treats.
A few event highlights included the Corgi Costume Contest, Best Corgi Butt, Corgi Limbo, and the Corgi Nut Pie Eating Contest, all of which kept the crowd entertained.
Interestingly, there’s folklore that suggests corgis were once the steeds of fairies and elves, adding a touch of whimsy to their already charming persona.
A special zone was dedicated to rescues in collaboration with Queen’s Best Stumpy Dog Rescue, further emphasizing community spirit.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi, recognized as the star of the day, is a herding breed from Wales, aptly named “dwarf dog.” Known for their friendly and intelligent nature, these dogs have also held a special place among royalty, notably with Queen Elizabeth II having owned over 30 during her reign, which certainly helped elevate their popularity worldwide.
Currently, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi enjoys a spot among the top 20 most popular dog breeds in the US, proving that their charm continues to resonate with many.
