Could President Trump Turn Alcatraz into a Prison Again?
That’s a thought-provoking notion.
In his budget proposal for fiscal year 2027, President Trump suggested allocating $152 million to renovate and reopen Alcatraz as an operational prison.
The intention, according to the budget, is to transform Alcatraz into a “modern, secure prison” that symbolizes justice.
This concept is intriguing, and perhaps Congress ought to seriously think about it.
Back in May, the President expressed his views on X, saying, “Rebuild and open Alcatraz!…In the past, when we were a more serious nation, we didn’t hesitate to lock up our most dangerous criminals…I’m collaborating with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Department of Homeland Security to guide the Bureau of Prisons in reopening a significantly expanded and rebuilt Alcatraz for America’s most ruthless criminals.”
He’s got a valid point.
Today, there seems to be a trend among some progressive politicians and prosecutors to have a more lenient approach toward criminals, often letting them go free. Sometimes, they do so repeatedly, compromising the safety of others. That feels fundamentally wrong. President Trump seems aware of this reality, and a revived Alcatraz could strongly reinforce this message.
Historically, Alcatraz housed notorious criminals, like Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and Robert Stroud, famously known as “The Birdman of Alcatraz.” It was a legendary fortress, diligent in containing gangsters and murderers on a 22-acre island, famously patrolled by sharks.
Reviving “The Rock” could capitalize on its historical mystique and send a wake-up call to current criminals—just imagine, one of those cells could end up being yours.
While many scoff at the idea—often driven by political biases—there are serious discussions to be had about the logistics of such a restoration, especially considering the high costs of transporting supplies to and from the island and its designation as a national historic landmark.
Yet, one can’t help but think, if anyone can pull this off, it’s Donald Trump.
His career demonstrates that he rarely lets critics define his path. Instead, he’s taken bold steps, often thinking outside conventional boundaries, achieving remarkable results. So, if he manages to turn this into reality, what more fitting tribute to law and order could there be?
