The unfair punishment of Hong Kong’s Jimmy Lai

The unfair punishment of Hong Kong's Jimmy Lai

20 Years in Prison – For What?

Jimmy Lai, the media mogul from Hong Kong, epitomizes the capitalist dream, a vision the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) seems intent on annihilating.

The 20-year prison sentence for Lai, aged 78 and founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily, represents not just a personal tragedy but also a stark warning from the Chinese government to the West. It’s a clear message: authoritarianism can crush individuals, regardless of their success or idealistic intentions. The CCP is sending a global alert—that anyone who challenges its authority will face dire consequences.

Jimmy Lai’s situation marks a poignant end to a significant chapter in Hong Kong’s history, signaling the demise of a once-thriving hub for Asian capitalism.

Asian Success Story

Lai’s journey is remarkable, underscoring the injustices he has faced. Born in Guangdong province in 1947, he escaped from oppressive communist control as a child, arriving in Hong Kong as a penniless stowaway.

Starting off in a sweatshop, Lai’s tenacity and the opportunities afforded by a free market led him to establish the Giordano retail empire, extending his business into Taiwan and Southeast Asia. He became one of the region’s most prosperous self-made billionaires, embodying the idea that financial liberty can unleash human potential.

Martyrdom and Reckoning

A pivotal moment occurred in 1989. Following the Chinese government’s violent crackdown on Tiananmen Square protests, Lai chose not to remain passive, instead opting to use his wealth to advocate for truth.

In 1995, he launched Apple Daily, a fiercely independent newspaper dedicated to uncovering corruption involving political elites in Beijing and Hong Kong. For years, Hong Kong served as a bastion of capitalism and a significant international media hub. But everything shifted after the Chinese government enacted a strict national security law in 2020. The promise of “One country, two systems” began to unravel.

Lai’s arrest marked the rapid criminalization of independent journalism, with him being wrongfully accused of “collusion with foreign forces.” Other outlets, like Stand News, soon followed in facing similar fates.

The End of Hong Kong

Lai’s imprisonment has raised an urgent alarm regarding democracy in the region. This was emphasized on February 24th by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan (FCCJ), which expressed deep concern over the severe sentence. Established in 1945, FCCJ has historically been a platform for journalists advocating for freedom across Asia. If journalists in Tokyo are sounding the alarm, it’s certainly something to take seriously.

The evidence of decline is staggering. According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Hong Kong’s press freedom ranking has plummeted from 18th to a dismal 140th in the world. Jodi Ginsburg from the Committee to Protect Journalists labeled the ruling as the “final nail in the coffin” for press freedom, while Human Rights Watch described it as a devastating blow that has silenced independent media.

The role Hong Kong once played as a haven for revealing the harsh truths of mainland China has vanished. Now, cities like Tokyo and Seoul must assume that responsibility.

Washington Litmus Test

The persecution of Jimmy Lai presents a crucial test for Washington. Will there be repercussions as the Chinese government aims to dismantle a global financial center, suppress press freedom, and potentially imprison a prominent billionaire dissident indefinitely? The CCP is closely observing the response. If there are no repercussions, the same tactics could easily be applied to Taiwan. Authoritarian expansion will continue unless met with firm opposition.

The U.S. can no longer treat the erosion of Hong Kong’s autonomy lightly. Strong statements and symbolic reactions are often seen as ineffective. The U.S. government must enforce aggressive sanctions against CCP officials and Hong Kong bureaucrats who manipulate the legal system to uphold this authoritarian regime. Moreover, demanding the release of Jimmy Lai and other political prisoners should be a fundamental prerequisite for any future diplomatic or economic dealings with China.

We Need a Response from the Free World

It’s noteworthy that Jimmy Lai had the means and a British passport to enjoy a comfortable life in London or New York. Yet, he chose to remain in Hong Kong, risking everything for freedom. He made his stand and faced grave consequences. Now, it’s time for the international community to respond before the shadow of authoritarianism spreads further across the globe.
